Hamadryas feronia

Family

Nymphalidae

Genus

Hamadryas

Specie

feronia

Forewing Length

35-38 mm

Range

Southern United States to Brazil. Subspecies: Central America.

Host Plant

Dalechampia (Euphorbiaceae).

Pupa Stage

Approximately 8-10 days.

Pupa Description

Color varies from green to brown , compared to other Hamadryas amphinome the head horns are more little.

Adults Description

Distinguished from similar species by the hindwing ocelli, which are without red crescents as in H. februa; pupils on the HW underside are smaller and less gray than in H. guatemalena.

Habits Description

Occurs from sea level to 1,400 m on both slopes, in all forest habitats. The habits are similar to H. februa, but I have no detailed notes on its behavior in Costa Rica because of the difficulty in identifying live individuals. Although apparently common in most other Central American countries, it is local and uncommon in Costa Rica collections.
