As we step into 2025, we’re proud to continue working side-by-side with the dedicated butterfly breeders who form the heart of CRES. Their hard work and deep connection with nature are what make it possible for us to supply the world’s butterfly exhibits with beautiful, high-quality specimens. This year, we’ve outlined three key priorities that reflect both our commitment to sustainability and the realities of a shifting economic landscape.
1. Regenerative Breeding Techniques
The first priority on our list is to continue supporting regenerative soil practices within breeding farms. Many of our breeders have worked their land for years, and some soils are in urgent need of nourishment and recovery. By introducing and reinforcing techniques such as composting, ground cover planting, and integrated pest management, we aim to help breeders not only restore soil health but also improve the long-term resilience and productivity of their farms. Healthier soils mean healthier host plants—and in turn, stronger butterflies.

2. Upgrading Infrastructure for Better Quality
Improving the tools and environments where butterflies are bred is our second major focus. This year, we are working with breeders to identify critical infrastructure upgrades—such as better cabinets and enclosures, and disease prevention tools—that can increase both the quality and the yield of the pupae.
Our goal is to help breeders streamline their processes, reduce losses due to disease, and ultimately deliver a stronger, healthier pupae that reflects the highest standards of quality that our customers expect.

3. Navigating Economic Challenges Together
Lastly, 2025 presents a significant financial challenge: the continued devaluation of the U.S. dollar against the Costa Rican colón. This shift puts pressure on export-related activities, including the day-to-day costs faced by breeders who rely on USD-based income.
At CRES, we are advocating for and exploring new ways to maintain favorable trading conditions that protect our breeders from sudden income fluctuations. Whether through fair pricing policies, payment timing strategies, or open dialogue with our international partners, we’re committed to ensuring that the butterfly trade remains a sustainable and rewarding activity for all involved.
Together with our breeders, we face this new year with purpose and optimism. These priorities reflect our shared values—caring for the land, investing in quality, and adapting to change. We look forward to working together and sharing more of our progress as the year unfolds.
